Engelaar was a key figure in Marco Van Basten's selection in this summer's EURO finals, before being ousted by Russia.

The 28-year-old grabbed the attention of Premiership clubs like Newcastle and Everton, but implied that he opts for the Bundesliga option.

"I just want to make that step (Schalke) and there are clear agreements that have been made there," he told RTV.

"It would be a pity if Twente do not want it. I want clarification, but that will happen this week.

"As from tomorrow morning, I will be doing more. I assume it will go well. I hope it does, in any case."

On the other hand, German daily Bild reported that Schalke are weighing a deal worth 5.5M Euros for the Dutchman.
