Manchester United and Chelsea are ready to battle it out for the signature of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, English reports said on Monday.

The Telegraph stated that United see Schweinsteiger as a potential replacement for star Cristiano Ronaldo, who may join Spanish champions Real Madrid.

Chelsea are also ready to bid for the 23-year-old, who has one year remaining on his contract with Bundesliga winners Bayern.

Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who took over at Chelsea following the sacking of Avram Grant, believes Schweinsteiger would be a very useful addition.

Scolari was impressed by the player’s display in Germany’s 3-2 quarter-final win over Portugal, the team he managed during EURO 2008.

"England does have a good appeal, as it is one of the world’s best leagues," Schweinsteiger said.

"I have heard all about it from Michael (Ballack), Jens Lehmann and Thomas Hitzlsperger who have all played there.

"I’ve always wanted to play there and we’ll see if it happens this year," he added.
