The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said that the former U-20 team coach has signed a four-year contract, succeeding Luiz Felipe Scolari, who joined Chelsea.
"I am very proud and honored to be able to go back and serve my country," Queiroz said in a statement from the FPF.
"This is a very special position that any professional would want."
Queiroz has an exciting coaching career as he managed in Portugal, USA, Japan, UAE, South Africa and Spain.
The Mozambique-born tactician had an unsuccessful spell at Real Madrid in 2003-2004, before he joined United as an assistant with Sir Alex Ferguson.
