Serie A side Sampdoria announced that they are hopeful of signing Argentine striker Hernan Crespo from Inter after any hopes they had of signing Andriy Shevchenko from Chelsea vanished.

The club’s technical director Beppe Marotta stated that he would love to repeat the experience of reviving Antonio Cassano’s career in the shape of Hernan Crespo after the latter struggled to find a regular place within the Inter attack last season.

“In Genoa, we had Cassano as a model, a great player offered by a big club like Real Madrid. And if you were to have a similar opportunity that fits our needs, then we will have to consider it,” Marotta told Corriere Dello Sport on Tuesday.

The Genoa club earlier tried to lure Shevchenko from Chelsea after the Ukrainian became a benchwarmer at Stamford Bridge since his move from AC Milan in 2006.

However, Marotta conceded that it is very unlikely Shevchenko will make the move to Luigi Ferarris.

“Signing Shevchenko was suggested, but now there is zero possibility he will join us. I just keep thinking of Adriano Galiani’s words that if Sheva comes back to Italy it will only be to wear Milan’s red and black shirt.”
