American swimming prodigy Michael Phelps clinched another gold medal in the men's 200m freestyle final, smashing his own world record of 1 minute 42.96 seconds.

The 23-year-old secured his third gold medal in Beijing to make it three out of three, aiming for a record of eight gold medals this summer.

However, Phelps has already made history as he has become one of five athletes to collect nine gold medals throughout his Olympic career.

He is one medal away from becoming the most successful Olympian ever.

Korea's Tae-Hwan Park won the silver medal, while Peter Vanderkaay of USA won bronze.
