A late strike from Vicente earned Valencia a hard-fought 3-2 win over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup first leg at the Mestalla.

Juanma Mata cancelled out Ruud van Nistelrooy's early opener shortly after the break.

Three minutes later Mata turned provider as he delivered a fine cross to EURO 2008 top scorer David Villa who powered a header past Iker Casillas.

But once again Van Nistelrooy levelled when he fired a first-time volley in the 68th minute to make it 2-2.

Eight minutes from time, substitute Vicente scored the decider to give Los Ches an advantage before the return leg next Sunday at the Bernabeu.
