Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out for three weeks because of an ankle injury sustained against Newcastle in Sunday's Premier League opener.
Carrick had to be substituted after 25 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and will miss England's friendly with Czech Republic on Wednesday.
"Michael could be out for a couple of weeks. The ankle swelled up right away and we couldn't give him any time to recover," United's boss Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game.
The Scot had to do without many of his key players including Cristiano Ronaldo, who is sidelined until October with an ankle injury, Anderson is on international duty with Brazil and Carlos Tevez had to return to Argentina due to a family bereavement.
However, Tevez might be ready for next week-end's encounter against Portsmouth.
