Ronaldo returns

Manchester United beat Mohamed Shawky's Middlesbrough 3-1 in the Carling Cup third round on Tuesday.

While Mohamed Shawky started the game for Boro before being replaced in the second half, Mido was ruled out for injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo headed in the opener in the 25th minute on his return to the starting lineup.

Substitute Adam Johnson fired from the edge of the area to level the score in the 56th minute.

However Gareth Southgate suffered a huge blow as Emanuel Pogatetz was dismissed in the 66th minute.

Manchester United snatched the victory courtesy of a two late goals from Ryan Giggs, 79, and Nani, 95, who produced some fine skills against a poor Boro defending.

Elsewhere Arsenal thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 6-0 with their youngest ever squad as manager Arsene Wenger fielded a startling lineup with a 19 year-old average age.
