Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce said he'll do his utmost to keep hold of the club's striking partnership between Amr Zaki and Emile Heskey next season.

Since his loan move from Zamalek in the summer, Zaki caught everybody's interest with some dazzling displays and five Premiership goals so far.

"Keeping Zaki and Heskey is fundamental to us. I've been a centre-half and I know for a fact I wouldn't want to play against that pair," Bruce told Sky Sports on Saturday.

Zaki's performances have also helped Emile Heskey retain his form, and the former Liverpool man has become part of Fabio Capello's England setup.

"My chairman will back me to keep the pair but how can I deny these lads the opportunity if one of the big boys comes knocking on our door? That's the problem we are going to have to address this term."

Bruce was heavily criticized upon first signing Zaki, but the ex-Birmingham boss stated his delight that Zaki proved his critics wrong.

"The thing which most impressed me was his hunger and desire. He was desperate to come to this country and prove himself," added Bruce.
