Spurs relieved the 54-year-old of his duty last week and shortly installed Harry Redknapp instead.

"I am very surprised it didn't work for Ramos and I feel sorry for him because I rate him as a coach and as a man," Wenger was quoted by skysports.com a saying.

The Frenchman believes Ramos needed more time to adapt to the new team and make tangible progress.

"It takes time to get your ideas through. I understand Tottenham have to make decisions, but you would want anyone to be given more than eight or nine games," he added

"Now they have gone a completely different way and done away with the director of football because they were suddenly convinced it doesn't work for them."

Short Spell

The Spanish boss spent less than a year at White Hart Lane. He led the London-based side to the Carling Cup title last season, but they were hugely destabilized afterwards.

Eventually, the severely-deteriorated form prompted Hotspur officials to appoint a new head coach.

"What sometimes happens in this league is when a team doesn't go for Europe and wins the Carling Cup, they suddenly switch off," Wenger explained.

"Without anyone noticing, slowly you lose results. And then, if you don't start the next season well, which is what happened to Ramos, his environment slowly lost confidence in him."

The Gunners boss referred Ramos could have been more successful if his hiring date had been set several months earlier.

"I don't think he'd have been sacked if he had only arrived at Tottenham in July," the Frenchman said of Ramos.

"But the fact is he arrived in the middle of last season and people were less patient with their league position."

Regarding Redknapp, Wenger sounded uncertain whether the English manager is the right man to replace Ramos.

"Only time will tell whether Harry Redknapp will be a success," Wenger concluded.
