AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti is delighted to have silenced his critics by reaching Serie A summit following the club's hard fought win over Napoli on Sunday.

After two defeats in their opening league games, many predicted Milan's campaign will be a copycat of last season's where the club finished in a dismal fifth position.

"Admittedly, few thought after the first two games that we would be on top of the table so quickly," Ancelotti was quoted as saying by Calcio Italia.

"The team took the right approach all the way through and fought hard against Napoli, trying to play right to the end, when we received our just reward."

Ancelotti stressed that unlike last season, Milan now have a squad capable of competing in the league as well as in Europe where the club plays in the UEFA Cup.

"This year we have more strikers at our disposal compared to last season, when at this stage we were without Ronaldo and Pato plus Inzaghi had injury worries.

"There are many more options now and that gives us remarkable potential upfront."

After officially sealing the loan signing of David Beckham from Los Angeles Galaxy starting from January, Ancelotti confirmed that the England winger can well fit within the club's formation.

"Beckham can play in any of our three midfield roles. He is no longer a winger, as he has lost the pace necessary for that position."
