"He did not disclose the reasons for his resignation," Mekled told FilGoal.com.
Apparently, Abbas opted to hand in his resignation after learning that The Egyptian National Sports Council (NSC) intends to sack him and appoint a temporary committee.
That committee is set to run Zamalek until the club's presidential elections in July 2009.
Controversial lawyer Mortada Mansour, who has exerted lots of efforts to prove that Abbas' position as Zamalek chairman was illegal, is likely to nominate himself for the prestigious seat.
"The club members are responsible for choosing the new chairman. If they want me, I will step in," Mansour told Modern Sport.
Abbas Reign
The NCS appointed Abbas, a long-serving Zamalek fan, as the club's chairman in August 2006 in a bid to turn around the team's fortunes.
The wealthy businessman invested heavily in quality players but the White Knights were still outplayed by arch-rivals Ahli in domestic and continental competitions.
The board lacked the sufficient administrative skills to manage a powerful club in Zamalek.
The Cairo giants won just one title during Abbas' Reign – the Egyptian Cup in 2007.
