The former vice-president will be temporarily acting as the Cairo-based club chairman till the Egyptian National Sports council (NSC) decides on the Whites' future.
A reliable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told FilGoal.com that Amer might stay on as chairman till the upcoming presidential election.
Media reports, on the other hand, mentioned that Amer is going to be the president only till mid-November, whereupon a temporary committee is supposed to take over.
The NSC executive Medhat Al-Beltagi was quoted by local press as saying the interim chairman will be relieved of his duty once the temporary committee is elected.
It hasn't been decided whether or not Amer will take part in the presidential election in the next year.
Unsuccessful Tenure
Mamdouh Abbas had a two-year spell in charge of Zamalek, during which he failed to help the team overcome their stuttering form.
However, the well-off businessman invested a lot of money in high-profile players to bolster the team, but his poor managerial skills hugely hampered their progress.
The Cairo giants won just one title during Abbas' fruitless stint – the Egyptian Cup in 2007.
