Halawani lifts Veria to Greek Cup second round

Egyptian midfielder Amr Al-Halawani scored twice to help second-division side Veria spring a big surprise by beating Thrasivoulos Filis 3-2 to reach the Greek Cup round of 16.

Egyptian midfielder Amr Al-Halawani scored twice to help second-division side Veria spring a big surprise by beating Thrasivoulos Filis 3-2 to reach the Greek Cup round of 16.

Top-flight side Thrasivoulos took the lead in the 34th minute via Giannis Chloros’ goal.

But Al-Halawani drew Veria level one minute after the restart before putting them ahead eight minutes later.

Brazilian striker Geraldo Gelson wrapped up the surprising victory eight minutes past the hour mark.

Versatile midfielder Al-Halawani, an Ahli youth team product, joined Veria in the close season after his contract with fellow Greek club Apollon Kalamarias expired.
