Panathinaikos reached the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage as Group B winners after a 1-0 victory over Anorthosis of Cyprus and Inter Milan's defeat to Werder Bremen.

Inter, already qualified since last round, finished with eight points, two adrift of the Greeks.

Bremen will compete in the UEFA Cup after settling in third place on seven points, just one ahead of surprise package Anorthosis.

Veteran midfielder Giorgos Karagounis fired the winner for Panathinaikos nine minutes past the hour mark with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area.

The result meant that Panathinaikos registered a miraculous comeback as they lost their first two games in the group.

Anorthosis, on the other hand, saw their dream of appearing in the round of 16 in their debut campaign shattered by the defeat.

In Germany, Bremen rescued their European season, beating Serie leaders and title holders Inter 2-1.

Claudio Pizarro put the home side ahead in the 63rd minute before Markus Rosenberg doubled the lead in the 81st minute.

Two minutes from time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the consolation goal for Inter.
