Were Ahli punching above their weight?
The shocking 4-2 loss to North American champions Pachuca indicated that the Red Devils are by far immature to vie on the international stage with big guns.
The worst thing about the earth-shattering defeat is that the African champions had what it takes to pull off a victory over Pachuca, in terms of both high-caliber players and experience.
On the other hand, their inconsistency and negative attitude made them vulnerable in the second period of the match, and that's what cost them dearly.
Manuel Jose's men rested on their laurels after securing a two-goal cushion in the first half, and lost their eagerness to score afterwards, a typical retarded Egyptian-mentality.
They were made to pay for their post-goal approach. The Mexican outfit, who were way more stable throughout the game, overturned the 2-0 deficit, whereupon the Egyptian side completely collapsed.
Ahli players simply couldn't handle the pressure, they couldn't accept the fact that they were no longer ahead. Instead of redeeming themselves, they came on in the extra-time with an apathetic demeanor.
Thence, their opponents grasped the golden opportunity and took a stranglehold on the game, capitalizing on the silly rearguard blunders to score two more goals and down an out-of-sorts Ahli.
Pachuca didn't chalk up a win because they were the better side, but rather for keeping their spirit up in every single minute of the game.
They didn't give up when they were behind, and didn't ease off when they took the lead.
The Cairo Giants, the most decorated club on the Dark Continent, put in a fluctuating performance that raised questions over their credentials on a global scale, and shook their image as contenders in the Premier competition.
Such a high-profile team should have known how to deal with unexpected setbacks in a more professional way, and how to beat stubborn opponents like Pachuca.
The whole team fell apart out of the blue. Not only the backline, goalie Amir Abdul-Hamid or coach Jose are to blame for the loss, every individual is somehow responsible.
