Sevilla striker Frederic Kanoute has been heavily supported by Spanish football fans for sustaining the Palestinian cause.

The 31-year-old expressed his support for Palestine during the 2-1 victory over Deportivo in the Spanish Cup on Wednesday, and was cautioned as a result.

Well-known newspaper Marca conducted an online survey, which found that Kanoute is significantly backed for what he did.

According to the survey of the Spanish publication, 74% of its readers are convinced the Malian player does not deserve to be punished for revealing his political beliefs.

On the other hand, only 24% of the participants believe he ought to be handed a sanction.

Kanoute is widely expected to be sanctioned in the near future, as world governing body FIFA has prohibited such on-field acts.

A similar incident took place in the 2008 African Cup of Nations, when Ahli and Egypt star Mohamed Abou-Treika was yellow-carded upon displaying a pro-Palestine political slogan while celebrating his goal against Sudan.

Israel has waged fierce military attacks against Gaza since December 27th.

During several days, more than 700 residents were killed, and over 3100 were hurt.
