Mpondo's agent told FilGoal.com last week that his client agreed to join Zamalek.
But the 23-year-old has yet to pen the contract and speculation suggested the deal was about to collapse.
"Mpondo initially refused to undergo a trial, that's why talks were delayed," Khaled Refaat told FilGoal.com late on Sunday.
"Head coach Michel Decastel believes the player has good abilities, but he asked him to have a trial at Zamalek.
"Mpondo finally accepted that Decastel should have the chance to watch him in training."
Zamalek are seeking to land a reliable midfielder after seeing many players fail to accomplish the position's duties.
The likes of Ayman Abdul-Aziz, Ahmed Abdul-Raouf and Mohamed Aboul-Ella were not up to snuff this season.
Mpondo has been an integral part of the Cotonsport team, which reached this season's CAF Champions League final against Ahli.
He started his career with local club Racing Bafoussam before joining Cotonsport in 2003.
Mpondo was previously called up for the Cameroon national team but is yet to earn his first international cap.
