German side Schalke insisted on Thursday that striker Kevin Kuranyi has not been released by the club.

News appeared on Schalke's official website on Wednesday indicating that Schalke have dispensed with Kuranyi.

"That is absolutely not the case. At Schalke nothing like this has happened," the club's managing director Andreas Mueller told Bild.

Reports said that internet hackers are the ones who posted that story.

"We now have to clear up what was wrong with our homepage," Mueller added.

Later on, Kuranyi explained what happened that night in an interview with Schalke's website.

"I had dinner with my wife and two friends in a restaurant and so kept my mobile in silent mode," he said.

"I later found numerous missed calls and tens of SMS asking me 'what is going on'."
