Leverkusen were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Bochum on Sunday to miss out on the chance of narrowing the gap with leading clubs in the Bundesliga.

Christoph Dabrowski put Bochum ahead in the 32nd minute when he headed home a free-kick.

Leverkusen's in-form striker Patrick Helmes restored parity when he converted a 66th-minute penalty after Bochum's Mergim Mavraj handled the ball in the penalty area.

Mavraj was sent off after picking a second yellow card right after the referee pointed to the spot.

Leverkusen, who extended their winless streak to three matches, slipped to fifth place in the league table with 37 point, five behind joint second Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, VfL Wolfsburg, Hamburg SV.

Hertha Berlin, who defeated Energie Cottbus 3-1 on Saturday, lie at the summit on 46 points.
