Former Germany and Bayern Munich goalie Oliver Kahn is set to take up a managerial role at Bundesliga club Schalke.

The retired keeper held talks with Schalke chairman Clemens Toennies, and he seems close to succeeding Andreas Muller as general manager.

Kahn, who hung up his boots last summer after spending a remarkable season with Bayern, revealed that his discussion with Toennies went smoothly, but no agreement has been reached thus far.

"It is all about finding out what conditions exist and how we can achieve things there," Kahn told the Spiegel magazine.

"I have had several talks with Schalke. Whether it works out depends on many different factors."

The club president said further negations with Kahn will be held before appointing him as Muller's successor.

"Kahn is a good type with a huge capacity for work," stated Toennies. "We knocked the details off quickly, a concept has been discussed and we have a total agreement.

"We will speak again in two to three weeks again by telephone."
