Mohamed Abdul-Wahed scored a late goal to help Lierse SK claim a much-needed 1-0 victory at Sint Truidense in the Belgian second division on Wednesday.

The Egyptian midfielder, who was introduced as a second-half substitute, notched the winner three minutes from time after successfully finishing a counter-attack with a powerful left-foot shot.

Lierse are now trailing leaders Sint Truidense only by three points.

By the end of the season, the league winners will be automatically promoted to the Belgian Jupiler League, while the next four teams in the table will face each other in play-offs.

The winners among the four teams will then take on the first-division penultimate outfit in a make-or-break game, and the victory will give either side a first-division spot.

The Belgian second division will end in almost a month and a half, with Lierse having six games to go.
