Hamburg and Hertha Berlin beat Hannover and Bremen respectively to step up this year's Bundesliga title race.

In Hamburg, Croatian striker Mladen Petric scored twice to help Martin Jol's men overcome Hannover 2-1.

The result moves Hamburg back to third place in the table level on 54 points with second-placed Bayern Munich, who beat Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 on Saturday.

In Berlin, Hertha had to wait until the 87th minute to secure a 2-1 win over Werder Beremen.

International defender Per Mertesacker gave the visitors the lead just before the break.

The hosts started their comeback in the 71st minute thanks to a strike from Croatian defender Josip Simunic.

After hitting the woodwork twice, Raffael's wicked shot from 18 yards out secured Hertha their first win in four games.

Lucien Favre's men are now fourth with 52 points, just two behind Hamburg.
