Manchester United took a step closer towards the Premiership title with a comfortable 2-0 victory at strugglers Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Goals from Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-Sung helped the European champions grab their fifth successive win, while Boro suffered their first defeat at Riverside this year.

United have 80 points on top of the table, six ahead of Liverpool, who will host Newcastle on Sunday. Boro remain second from bottom with 31.

Once again, there was no place for Egypt midfielder Mohamed Shawky in the Boro squad.

On the other hand, Sir Alex Ferguson rested Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, whereas teenage sensation Federico Macheda was handed his first start.

The Red Devils faced no problems taking the lead on 25 minutes, thanks to a neat 20-yard shot from PFA Player of the Year Giggs.

Six minutes after the break, Park finished off a wonderful team move involving Giggs, Macheda and Wayne Rooney, who threaded a superb pass for the Korean to dispatch from 12 yards.

United are now gearing up for Tuesday's crunch Champions League semi-final clash with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, following their slender 1-0 win last week.
