Gerrard scored a goal and dished out an assist for Dirk Kuyt to hand the Reds a consolation win after they lost the title to Manchester United on Saturday.
West Brom become the first team to get relegated from the Premiership as they stayed rock bottom on 31 points, four adrift of the safe zone with one week left.
The result comes in favor of Mohamed Shawky's Middlesbrough, who are second from bottom with 32 points, one week before the end.
Liverpool cemented their second-place position on 83 points, four behind champions United and three ahead of Chelsea.
Anelka inspires Chelsea
Just like Gerrard inspired Liverpool's win at the Hawthorns, Nicolas Anelka steered Chelsea to a 2-0 home victory over Blackburn Rovers.
The French ace set up compatriot Florent Malouda with the first goal after four minutes, before notching home the second on 59 minutes.
Anelka took his tally to 18 Premiership goals, leveling with Cristiano Ronaldo on top of the scoring charts.
Chelsea remain third with 80 points, while Rovers lie 14th on 40.
