Middlesbrough were relegated from the English Premiership after losing 2-1 at West Ham at the final day of the season.

The defeat left manager Gareth Southgate's men nineteenth in the table with 32 points, three behind the safety zone.

Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Shawki started and ended the game on the bench for Middlesbrough.

Carlton Cole opened the score line for the Hammers on 33 minutes, but his strike was cancelled out by Gary O'Neill five minutes after the interval.

Junior Stanislas scored the winner for the home side in the 58th minute.

In the meantime, Middlesbrough will be accompanied in the Championship by Teeside rivals Newcastle United, after the latter lost to Aston Villa.

The Magpies couldn’t capitalize on Hull City's defeat to champions Manchester United, as a Damien Duff own-goal was enough to dent Alan Shearer's men.

The result allowed Hull to escape relegation with 35 points in seventeenth spot, just one point more than Newcastle.
