Mourinho said during a press conference on Friday that Inter's current squad was not strong enough to compete for Europe's premier competition.
The Portuguese boss, who was also unhappy with Inter's activities in the transfer window, said he couldn't work miracles to help Inter win their first European crown in 40 years.
"The Champions League is foremost in my thoughts and I think it is within our grasp. I don't want to hear any alibis," Moratti told Sky Sport 24.
"I know Mourinho, he likes to provoke fans and journalists. He creates a situation to fire everyone up and I take this as a provocation to get the players he wants.
"I don't think we are so far off the other teams, but also trust in the experience of the Coach who knows what elements he needs.
"We will not need miracles, just as winning the Scudetto was not a miracle, so I don't think it will be difficult, nor miraculous, to do better than last season in the Champions League."
Mourinho, who took over at Inter last summer, steered the club to their fourth straight Serie A title.
But Inter failed to get beyond the Champions League second round as they were eliminated by eventual runners-up Manchester United.
Mourinho called on the club's board to support him in the transfer market but the Nerazzurri signed just two players so far - Brazilian midfielder Thiago Motta and Argentinean striker Diego Milito (both from Genoa).
