Hendawi, one of Egypt's finest performers in the tournament, made 22 saves throughout the match to hand the Pharaohs a second successive victory in the main round.
The hosts, who were 14-13 up at the break, endured some nervy moments late in the game but scored three goals in the last two minutes to send the home fans into ecstasy.
"Our match against France tomorrow is a do-or-die one," Hendawi told Nile Sport after the game.
"We have nothing to lose. We will go for a win to reach the semi-final.
"I hope that we don't repeat today's mistakes because we wasted too many easy opportunities."
Egypt are level on six points with Germany and Argentina in Group A. They face France, who have no points, in the last group-stage game on Saturday.
The group winners and runners-up will reach the semi-final.
