Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini said that his side should be able to perform without star man Cristiano Ronaldo, following the 2-1 defeat at Sevilla.

Ronaldo had to sit out the game due to an ankle injury and curiously, Pellegrini's team received their first defeat of the season.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is an important player, but we built a team to compensate for players who are unavailable," the Chilean said after the Primera Liga game.

Ronaldo, who moved from Manchester United for a record £80million, is currently Real's top scorer with five goals in as many games.

Mistakes

Pellegrini admitted that Sevilla deserved their win as he lamented individual mistakes made by his players.

Sevilla took advantage of some poor defending as Jesus Navas and Renato notched in two headers to down Real.

"Two mistakes cost us the match, but we did have a chance to equalize," he added.

"Sevilla are having a great run. They deserved to win. They had more scoring opportunities than we did.

"You cannot be happy when you lose, but we made mistakes that resulted in goals.

"I think the match was decided by defensive mistakes. The fact that two relatively short players scored with their heads worries me."
