Liverpool ousted despite win over Debrecen

An early goal by David N'Gog was enough for Liverpool to beat Hungarian side Debrecen 1-0 away on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League, but the troubled Premiership side couldn't advance to the next round.

An early goal by David N'Gog was enough for Liverpool to beat Hungarian side Debrecen 1-0 away on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League, but the troubled Premiership side couldn't advance to the next round.

The French youngster broke the deadlock only after four minutes to give the Reds all three points, but to no avail.

Liverpool remain in third place in Group E with seven points, to keep lose their qualification hopes.

Minnows Debrecen, who have lost all of their games in the continental competition thus far, have no points at all.

In the same group, Fiorentina beat Lyon 1-0 to go top and secure a berth in the next round.

Juan Manuel Vargas converted a penalty kick one minute from the half-hour mark .

The Serie A giants are now on 12 points, two ahead of second-placed Lyon, who had gone through early in November.

Each team of the group have one match to go.
