Nigeria claimed an unimpressive 1-0 victory over Benin in the African Cup of Nations Group C, thanks to a first-half penalty from Yakubu Aiyegbeni.

The Super Eagles move to second place on three points, while Benin have one point from two games and are almost eliminated.

Nigeria were luckily given a penalty before half-time when a header from the fit-again Peter Odemwingie accidentally hit Romauld Boco's arm in the six-yard box.

Everton striker Yakubu, who also scored against Benin in Ghana 2008, coolly converted from the spot, sending Rachad Chitou the wrong way.

The Nigerians didn’t look like doubling their slender lead and the Squirrels of Benin were far from threatening as well.

Group C leaders Egypt have a fine chance of making the knockouts when they take on Mozambique later on Saturday.
