Ghana captain Michael Essien has been ruled out of Tuesday's crucial game with Burkina Faso, and fears are raised that he might miss the rest of the tournament with a fresh injury.

The Chelsea midfielder, who has just recovered from a hamstring tear, sustained a knee injury in training.

"I hope to stay and watch Tuesday's game here in Luanda but we'll just have to wait for the results," the Essien told BBC Sport.

The full extent of the injury will be determined on Monday when Ghana received the results of the scan.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have been boosted by the return of midfielder Anthony Annan to full training, following a knee problem.

Ghana must beat Burkina Faso in Cabinda to join Group B leaders Ivory Coast to the quarter-finals.
