"His attitude, knowledge and commitment to Barca make him a reference and a symbol of the club. I am convinced that he will become the captain of Barca."

The Spanish defender has established himself as a key player in Barcelona's squad since joining from English side Manchester United in the summer of 2008.

He usually partners Carles Puyol in the heart of the Catalans' defense.

"I am delighted to be staying. It seems like a long time to look ahead and that makes me happy," Pique, 23, said.

"Now I want to continue winning. The feeling of winning is unbeatable. Now we have to look ahead to more great things."
