Swedish Lars Lagerback has been appointed as Nigeria's new coach, the country's football federation (NFF) announced on Saturday.

Lagerback will lead the Super Eagles, who sacked coach Shaibu Amodu following their third-place finish in the African Cup of Nations last month, in this summer's World Cup in South Africa.

"NFF’s 15 –member Executive Committee picked Lagerback from an impressive pool of five," the federation said in a statement on their official website.

"The pool included former Senegal Coach Bruno Metsu, former Ghana boss Ratomir Dujkovic, ex –England star and Coach Glenn Hoddle, and former England and Mexico Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson."

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata was initially included in Nigeria's shortlist for their vacant managerial seat but the Egyptian FA rebuffed their approach.

Nigeria were drawn with Argentina, South Korea and Greece in Group B of the World Cup.
