Manchester United hitman Wayne Rooney shrugged off his knee injury and is set to lead England's frontline in Wednesday's friendly versus Egypt.

After scoring the winner in United's Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa on Sunday, Rooney complained from a knock to his knee, but the 24-year-old is now set to play at Wembley.

"I went for a scan today and it is just a bit of bruising," he told Sky Sports News.

"I had a rest today but I should train tomorrow and hopefully play Wednesday.

"I always want to play for my country and I will be involved and should be fit to play."

Big Game

Rooney is looking forward to a winning return with the Three Lions, who suffered defeat to Brazil in their last gathering in November.

"It is good to be back, we were beaten by Brazil last time and it is nice to get back and hopefully return to winning ways," added the Premier League's top scorer.

"It is a big game for us to get back together as a squad and it is a big game, which we want to win.

"Egypt are a strong team and difficult to play against and hopefully we can get a good result.

"They have won the African Cup of Nations the last three times and we have to try and prepare for the World Cup. This is probably the first step and I am sure if the manager has ideas this will be the first chance to use them."
