AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta refused to get back to the international stage ahead of the 2010 World Cup.

The former Italy man, who was part of the Azzurri's triumphant World Cup campaign in 2006, was asked by Marcello Lippi to come out of international retirement.

However, the 33-year-old resolutely turned him down.

"He told me, I believe in a definitive manner, that he doesn't feel like it," Italy boss Lippi stated.

"I am sorry. I wanted to give a spark. But I respect his decision."
