Newcastle United have sealed promotion to the English Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

Peter Lovernkrands and Kevin Nolan scored the all-important goals at St. James' Park to maintain Chris Hughton side's unbeaten home record this term.

The Magpies were guaranteed a top-two finish in the Championship, following Nottingham Forest's goalless draw with Cardiff.

"It's an incredible feeling, especially to do it here, in front of these supporters," said Irish manager Hughton.

"There are still games to play and we still want to stay top of the division.

"We've still got the title to play for but it's a real honor to be manager of this football club and bring Premier League football back to these supporters.

"We deserve to be in the Premier League - we didn't at the end of last season because our position didn't lie.

"But we have earned the right to be back in there and I think this club deserves to be there.

"You have achievements as a player which you will always remember; I have been involved as a coach in my time at Tottenham where we have won things.

"But in a managerial position, this is my first achievement and it's a very, very proud moment for me."

Newcastle are in charge of the Championship table with 89 points from 41 games, six points ahead of second-placed West Brom.

The Toon Army were demoted from the Premier League last season after 16 seasons in the top flight.
