Former Liverpool owner David Moores 'hugely' regrets selling the Premiership club to George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

American duo Gillett and Hicks took over the Reds three years ago but the acquisition bore bitter fruit.

Under the ownership of the pair, Liverpool suffered severe financial setbacks and now are up for sale once again.

In a letter to The Times, Moores highlighted that both Americans didn't fulfill their obligations.

"The document pledged there would be no debt placed upon the club, and significant funds would be made available for investment in the squad and the new stadium," the letter reads.

"I call upon them (Gillett and Hicks) to stand back, accept their role in the club's current demise, and stand aside with dignity."
