Uruguay striker Diego Forlan scooped the Golden Ball award as the best player in the World Cup, FIFA announced following Spain's win over Holland in the final.

Forlan scored five times in the tournament but Holland's Wesley Sneijder and Spain's David Villa, both netting as many goals, were the biggest nominees for the prize.

Uruguay finished fourth after losing to Germany 3-2 in the third-place play-off.

The Atletico Madrid man won the Europa League with his Spanish club earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Spain captain Iker Casillas won the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper in the tournament.

He played every minute in his Spain's seven games towards the title and conceded just two goals, both in the group stage.
