The 27-year-old, who has an Italian father, completed the move after acquiring an EU passport.

"Marcos is a strong, powerful defender and will add depth to the squad. He is also very keen to get forward from that position so that adds an extra dimension to the side," manager Steve Bruce told Sunderland's website.

"He has been one of the best right full-backs in South America in recent years and has really impressed us when we've watched him."

Angeleri is expected to compete with Egypt full-back Ahmed Al-Muhammadi for a place on the right flank, along with first choice Phillip Bardsley.
