Emad Meteb's Standard Liege opened their Belgian league campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to 10-man Zulte-Waregem on Friday.

The visitors took the lead via a fine curling shot from Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Khaleem Hyland in the 34th minute.

They had midfielder Stijn Meert sent off three minutes past the hour mark for a second bookable offense.

Standard Liege capitalized on their numerical advantage to secure a share of spoils, thanks to an 87th-minute goal from captain Steven Defour.

Egyptian striker Meteb, who moved to the 10-time Belgian champions after his contract with Cairo giants Ahli expired, missed the game because he is yet to recover from a persistent back complaint.

He remains doubtful for Standard Liege's second league game against Egyptian-owned Lierse on August 7.
