English big-spending club Manchester City and ailing giant Juventus were paired in Group A along with Austria's Salzburg and Polish side Lech Poznan.
Liverpool, who were a regular member of the Champions League but had to play in the less glamorous Europa League after finishing seventh in the English Premier League last season, will face Italy's Napoli and Romania's Steaua Bucharest in Group K.
The groups' winners and runners-up will qualify for the competition's round of 32, where they will be joined by the eight teams who finish third in the Champions League groups.
