Dutch veteran Ruud van Nistelrooy has been called up to Holland's squad for their opening Euro 2012 qualifiers, after striker Robin van Persie was injured.

Arsenal hitman Van Persie picked up an ankle problem in the Gunners' 2-1 Premiership win over Blackburn on Saturday and is set to be sidelined for a few weeks, according to the Dutch Football Association.

To fill the void left by Van Persie's injury, Holland coach Bert van Marwijk named Van Nistelrooy for the Euro qualifying campaign.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United star Van Nistelrooy hasn't featured for his country since EURO 2008.

The 34-year-old, who joined Hamburg from Real this summer, has scored three goals in the Bundesliga so far.

World Cup runners-up Holland face Group E qualifiers San Marino in Serravalle on Friday before playing Finland in Rotterdam four days later.
