Six Alex Ferguson nearly fielded a whole new squad from the one that featured in the Premiership 3-3 draw with Everton on Saturday.
Three-time European champions United got the upper hand most of the time but were unable to translate their dominance into goals.
"The players played with great intensity and commitment and worked their socks off," United manager Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports after the match.
"I think I played a strong team and the players I picked should have won the game. Credit to Rangers, the system they played was very difficult to break down."
Elsewhere, Spanish team Valencia eased to a 4-0 victory at Turkey's Bursaspor in the other match of Group C.
