Xavi out of Spain squad

Barcelona star Xavi was a surprise omission from Spain's squad for next month's EURO 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Scotland.

According to Spanish media, the midfield maestro has been left out to treat an Achilles injury.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol also missed out due to injury.

World champions Spain opened their qualifying campaign with an easy 4-0 victory over Group I minnows Liechtenstein this month.

Spain squad:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Victor Valdes (Barcelona), Pepe Reina (Liverpool).

Defenders: Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Carlos Marchena (Villarreal), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Nacho Monreal (Osasuna).

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Villarreal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona).

Strikers: Pedro (Barcelona), Jesus Navas (Sevilla), David Villa (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City), Fernando Llorente (Athletic Bilbao), Fernando Torres (Liverpool).
