Last month, the Black Cats drew with Arsenal and Liverpool as well. Their only victory so far this season has been scored over star-studded Manchester City late in August.
Now Sunderland lie 10th in the league table with eight points while second-placed United are two behind leaders Chelsea.
As usual, right-sided winger Ahmed Elmohamady played the whole 90 minutes of the match and was quite influential in midfield, whipping in a good number of crosses.
The Egypt ace outplayed Red Devils' left back John O'Shea most of the time.
Elmohamady, who joined the Premier League side in the summer on an extendable season-long loan, could have broken his Sunderland scoring duck with a shot from inside the area.
But his drive hit a challenger before his left-footed follow-up effort went wide.
