Ahmed Elmohamady has been benched for the first time since joining Sunderland in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Tuesday.

The Egypt winger has been a regular starter for the Black Cats over the past weeks and his capabilities were praised by his manager Steve Bruce on many occasions.

However, Elmohamady was kept on the bench throughout the 90 minutes of the match at White Hart Lane.

Instead, Bruce played Jordan Henderson as a right-sided midfielder.

Tottenham's Rafael van der Vaart headed the opener five minutes past the hour mark but Asamoah Gyan restored parity two minutes later from close range.

Sunderland now lie in seventh place with 16 points, trailing sixth-placed Tottenham on goal difference.
