England skipper Rio Ferdinand says Social networking site Twitter helped him overcome his disappointment over missing out on this year's World Cup.

The Manchester United defender was left out of the Three Lions squad due to a knee injury he sustained in the first training session in South Africa.

"I would have loved nothing more than to lead my country out in South Africa," Ferdinand told Absolute Radio.

"I was obviously gutted to miss the World Cup through injury but kept updated through Twitter.

"Getting in touch with players and fans and it went from there. I have to say I'm addicted to Twitter now to be honest. It really bridges that gap between us and the fans."

On whether United Manager Alex Ferguson is likely to use the renowned site, Ferdinand said: "I don't think (he'll be joining) any time soon.

"He knows about it but I very much doubt he'll be using it."

Ferdinand, 32, has now 175,000 followers on Twitter.
