The 2006 World Cup champion with Italy has twice assaulted Spurs assistant coach Joe Jordan, who hardly moved a muscle in retaliation.
While he now faces imminent action from UEFA, Gattuso said he regrets his antics.
"I lost control. There is no excuse for what I have done. I take my responsibilities for that," the Milan midfielder said after the 1-0 defeat at San Siro.
"I was nervous. I didn't want to argue with players and I did it with him, but I was wrong to do what I have done."
Gattuso’s fiery performance earned him a yellow card that will rule him out of the second round match in London.
