"Some people attacked me while I was in (assistant coach) Tarek Soliman's car," he told FilGoal.com.
"They wanted to assault me but the military police protected us. That's why I didn't show up in the training."
It's believed Hossam's support for former president Hosni Mubarak during the 18-day revolution was behind the incident.
The former Egypt captain was one of many public figures that backed Mubarak before he was ousted.
Hossam and football director Ibrahim, whose political stance was similar to his twin brother's, incurred the wrath of Zamalek's fans of late for their attitude towards the revolt.
